An emblem of sophistication, the Martini is a truly iconic cocktail which is often said to be the ‘king of cocktails’. Although it consists of just two ingredients, gin (or vodka) and vermouth, there are many variations. A ‘Wet Martini’, for example, is one with a greater ratio of vermouth to gin, whereas a ‘Dry Martini’ means more gin and less vermouth. For the Martini purists, a ‘Bone Dry Martini’ consisting of pure gin and no vermouth, is the preferred choice - a favourite of Winston Churchill. Then there’s the ‘Dirty Martini’, made with a dash of olive brine and embellished with a green olive, and the ‘Gibson’ which uses a pickled onion as the garnish.
Here at the Cotswolds Distillery, we wanted to share our simple & delicious Cloudy Martini recipe with you all, which is made using our award-winning Cotswolds Dry Gin. Our Head of Mixology, Ollie, is here to explain why he thinks our gin works so well in a Martini.
‘For me, the perfect Martini is a Cloudy Martini that is stirred down with ice, using a ratio of 5:1 (5 parts Cotswolds Dry Gin to 1 part Vermouth). I recommend using a good quality French Vermouth, such as Dolin which complements the citrus and herbal notes of our Cotswolds Dry Gin, to create a citrusy and spiced finish. Garnishing the Martini with fresh grapefruit peel will also enhance the freshness of the cocktail whilst bringing out the flavour of the pink grapefruit - one of the key botanicals used to make our Cotswolds Dry Gin.
The Cloudy Martini is like drinking a cool botanical cloud. As our Cotswolds Dry Gin is non-chill filtered, the essential oils are retained in the gin and so it turns cloudy when ice is added. Stirred Martinis using other gins will not go cloudy as this is unique to Cotswolds Dry Gin.'

Cocktail jar (or clean jam jar or a glass bowl)
Fine strainer (or a sieve)
75ml Cotswolds Dry Gin
15ml White Vermouth
Fill a Martini glass and a cocktail jar glass with ice (chilling the equipment helps the Martini to be as cold as possible when stirring down the Martini instead of shaking). Add the Cotswolds Dry Gin and Vermouth to the cocktail jar filled with ice. Stir down the Martini 22 times (stirring chills the cocktail and marries the gin and vermouth together; for more dilution, stir more times). Pour the ice out of the Martini glass. Strain the Martini from the cocktail jar into the Martini glass using a julep strainer and a fine strainer. Express grapefruit peel over the Martini and then rest it in the Martini. Enjoy!
