This month, we're excited to introduce you to Alice, who perhaps has one of the most exciting jobs at the distillery inventing all of the recipes for our new products in our Research & Development lab! Discover how Alice started working with us, where she gets her inspiration from and why our Old Tom Gin is her favourite product.
TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOURSELF!
I'm Alice, I'm 20 years old and I live just 5 minutes down the road from the distillery! I grew up in Warwickshire and studied in Stratford-upon-Avon. In my spare time, I enjoy playing the guitar, cooking and doing lots of arty things (mostly making weird sculptures). I have a rescue greyhound named Comet and lots of pet fish.
HOW DID YOU GET INTO THE DRINKS INDUSTRY?
I joined the distillery two years ago, straight after completing my A-Levels. I was planning on taking a gap year before going to university and so I joined the distillery by helping out in the shop and in bottling to earn some money. I then realised I really love the Cotswolds and couldn't imagine myself leaving for a big city any time soon, so I decided to stay in the area and thought this could be way cooler than going to university!
WHAT DOES YOUR JOB INVOLVE?
I now head up New Product Development and general Research & Development for the distillery, as well as being responsible for the production of lots of products including our Wildflower Gin, Old Tom Gin and Ginger Gin.
WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE THING ABOUT WORKING AT THE DISTILLERY?
I love so many aspects of my job, especially the messy and large scale things, as I like getting stuck into big tasks and the feeling of accomplishment once it's all done.
We also have a local owl who flies over the field almost every week in the early mornings when I get in.
WHAT'S THE TRICKIEST PART OF YOUR JOB?
Co-ordinating the production of an ever-extending line of products! Sometimes it feels like there aren't enough days in the month...
IF YOU HAD ANY ADVICE FOR ANYONE LOOKING AT GETTING INTO THE INDUSTRY, WHAT WOULD IT BE?
Be open-minded and don't let your fears hold you back from saying yes to big projects, listen to the boss and get stuck in.
WHERE DO YOU FIND INSPIRATION FOR CREATING NEW PRODUCTS?
I find a lot of inspiration from my experiences in cooking. I like finding ways of using classic flavours to make something that is simple but well-executed.
AS A FOODIE, WHERE'S YOUR FAVOURITE PLACE TO EAT IN THE COTSWOLDS?
I'd have to stick to my local, the Norman Knight in Whichford.
WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE PRODUCT WE'VE MADE?
If I was being biased (which I'm usually not allowed to be!), I have to say I am proudest of the Old Tom Gin, as this was the first recipe I ever developed myself.
AND LASTLY, OF COURSE, WHAT'S YOUR FAVOURITE COTSWOLDS SERVE?
I'm easy to please in terms of drinks, no fancy cocktails! I love our Founder's Choice Single Malt Whisky, sometimes with a splash of red vermouth. Or maybe a 1616 Barrel-Aged Gin mixed with ginger ale.
