How to plant your seeds

1. Ground Preparation

  • Choose soil that isn’t very fertile and is free from weeds.
  • First, get rid of all weeds and dig the soil to bury any remaining plant parts.
  • Rake the soil to make it smooth.
  • Press the soil down to make it firm.

2. Sowing

  • Plant seeds in autumn or spring, but you can plant in other seasons if it’s warm and moist.
  • Scatter the seeds on the surface. Mixing them with sand can help spread them evenly.
  • Press the seeds into the soil with a roller or by walking over them, but don’t bury them.
  • One packet of seeds can cover 2-4 square meters.

3. First Year Management

  • Some plants will grow slowly, others grow fast and add colour.
  • Cut down everything in mid to late summer to help the young plants grow.
  • Keep cutting the grass until the end of March the next year.
  • Remove any persistent weeds.

4. Management Once Established

  • Let the plants grow without cutting from spring to late July or August to allow them to flower.
  • After they flower, cut the grass down to about 50mm high.
  • Leave the cuttings to dry and drop seeds for 1-7 days, then clear them away.
  • Cut the regrown grass from late fall to winter to about 50mm high, and again in spring if necessary.

This makes it easy to manage your wildflowers successfully!
